Setup guide

Ready in a few native steps.

Mac Prompt Rewriter is a quiet menu-bar app for supported ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex composers. It needs your own ChatGPT sign-in and Accessibility permission so it can read and replace the draft you chose.

Before you start

Current release scope: In preparation. The launch policy is draft-first. Contextual history stays off until the account-isolation gate is proven in the shipped environment.

Build status: a signed, ready-to-download app is not published. The source-build path is under validation; see build from source if you want to inspect the project.

First run

  1. Open Mac Prompt Rewriter. It stays in the menu bar.
  2. Open Settings → Connection and confirm the Codex executable if discovery needs help.
  3. In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, enable the exact installed app.
  4. Return to a supported ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, or Codex composer with an unsent draft.
  5. Press Option–Space for Enhance or Control–Option–Space for Adversarial.

What happens next

Mac Prompt Rewriter captures the current draft, retains the originating destination, and starts one rewrite through the Codex App Server. The launch scope uses the draft alone. A future contextual mode can use an exact origin only after the account-isolation behavior is verified; it must never choose history by recency or title.

When a complete result arrives, Mac Prompt Rewriter replaces the unchanged draft. Review that replacement in the composer, edit it if needed, and send it manually. If you edit the composer, change focus, cancel, or the result is incomplete, Mac Prompt Rewriter leaves your current edits untouched and never restores an older captured copy over them. It never presses Return or submits the prompt.

Two editable modes

ShortcutModeIntent
Option–SpaceEnhanceClarify and strengthen the draft while preserving intent.
Control–Option–SpaceAdversarialTurn the draft into a constructive request to test assumptions, evidence, risks, and alternatives.

Both modes use editable guidelines in Settings → Rewrite. A complete hotkey result silently replaces the unchanged draft, then stays in the composer for you to review and send manually. Repeated hotkeys during an active rewrite are ignored; cancel remains available from the menu.

If you edit the composer, change focus, cancel, or the result is incomplete, Mac Prompt Rewriter leaves your current edits untouched. It does not restore an older captured copy over them.

When something does not work

No Accessibility permission

The hotkey does not request permission for you. Grant it manually to the exact installed app, then retry. Rebuilding an ad-hoc local copy can invalidate the grant.

No context

Draft-first launch behavior does not need task history. Mac Prompt Rewriter does not select a recent task or guess from a title.

Codex unavailable

Keep the original draft. Check ChatGPT sign-in, the Codex executable configuration, model availability, and network access. A Mac Prompt Rewriter license would not include ChatGPT access or guarantee service availability.
